Plain English explanations of how Canada actually works for health, supplement, and beauty brands. What gets licensed, what gets labelled, what gets sold, and where market entries stall.

Guides background

Guides

Canada looks like an extension of the United States market until you try to ship into it. Different regulator, different label law, different marketplace, different retail structure. These are the four areas where the difference is largest.

Entering the Canadian Market

Four things Canada asks for before you sell: a licensed product, bilingual packaging, a named importer of record, and a landed cost you have actually modelled. Museo handles all four under one roof. We file the licence, build the artwork, clear the entry, and model the cost before you ship a unit.

How Health Canada Reviews

NPN, DIN, DIN-HM, CNF, or MDL. Your stream determines your timeline, the licence your importer holds, and what your label can say. Our team brings over twenty years across all five, and we know which filings qualify for expedited pathways. That means faster approvals than the average applicant gets.

Amazon.ca Is Not Amazon.com

It looks like the same platform, but it is a separate marketplace with its own ranking, buy box, and fee structure, and the Canadian cost base is higher. We build your .ca presence off your existing .com listing while ranking, pricing, and account health stay independent. Managed entirely in house.

How Canadian Retail Buys

Distributor margins, listing fees, and buyer calendars set months ahead of the shelf reset. We manage the full external distribution line for our brands, covering retail and wholesale accounts and the buyer relationships behind them, plus Canadian packaging, trade collateral, and retail marketing.

Readiness

What has to be true before you sell in Canada, and what usually is not.

Before You Pitch a Canadian Retailer

Buyers want a landed cost, a Canadian case pack, a valid licence number, bilingual packaging in hand, and a distributor who can service the account.

We prepare the full buyer package and hold the relationship afterwards, covering pricing structure, case configuration, trade collateral, and the replenishment that decides whether a listing survives its first review cycle.

Before You Sign Anything

Who owns the product licence, what happens to it if the relationship ends, what volume you are committing to, and who carries liability if a product has to be recalled or relabelled. Distribution agreements are where market entries quietly go wrong, long before anything ships.

We say this openly because we sit on the other side of it, and those terms are worth negotiating carefully with any Canadian partner.

Before the First Shipment

Licence issued, bilingual artwork approved, importer of record named, HS codes confirmed, and duty plus GST built into the landed cost.

Museo holds its own Health Canada site licence, so we act as your importer of record rather than sending you to find one. We design the bilingual artwork, arrange pickup directly from your manufacturer or warehouse, and handle customs, duties, and taxes end to end.

Where Labels Fail

Missing French, claims that are legal in the United States but not here, the wrong nutrition panel format, no Canadian responsible party address, and quantities on the box that do not match the licence.

We build Canadian artwork against the licence rather than against the American label, so the two agree before anything goes to print, and we flag claims that will not survive review at the artwork stage.

Before You Launch on Amazon.ca

Brand Registry enrolment, a Canadian listing build rather than a copy of the American one, inventory planning that assumes cross border transit, and a plan for the sellers already listing your product without permission.

We run Amazon.ca in house, and because we are the licence holder and importer of record, we have standing to act on unauthorized sellers rather than only report them.

The Economics

Most failed Canadian entries are not regulatory failures. They are pricing failures that only became visible after the first container landed. These are the numbers to run before you commit.

Why Grey Market Sellers Appear

Why Grey Market Sellers Appear

They appear because there is money in the gap. An unmanaged price difference between markets, or a distributor with excess inventory, is enough. Removing them is a combination of pricing discipline, Brand Registry enforcement, and controlling who has authorized supply. We handle all three.

Minimum Orders and Working Capital

Minimum Orders and Working Capital

Canada is roughly a tenth of the United States by population, so American minimum order quantities often do not fit. Ordering to an American MOQ can mean holding a year of Canadian inventory. We size the first order against realistic Canadian velocity, not against your domestic case pack.

What Bilingual Packaging Costs

What Bilingual Packaging Costs

Bilingual packaging is a design cost, a plate cost, and sometimes a panel space problem, since French runs longer than English. Solving it late means reprinting. Our team designs to the Canadian requirement from the start, which is cheaper than adapting an American layout twice.

After Launch Is the Hard Part

After Launch Is the Hard Part

Entry is a project. Staying on shelf is an operation: replenishment forecasting, stockout prevention, licence amendments when formulas change, and retail account service. We run all of it as ongoing management rather than handing you the keys at launch and stepping back.

Landed Cost, Not FOB

Landed Cost, Not FOB

Duty, freight, brokerage, GST, and distributor margin stack differently here than they do domestically. A price that works in the United States can be underwater in Canada once all of it is loaded in. We model the full landed cost per SKU before either side commits to a purchase order.

One Price Ladder, All Channels

One Price Ladder, All Channels

Direct, marketplace, and wholesale need to sit on a single ladder. A visible gap between your .com price and your .ca price is precisely what invites arbitrage sellers to buy American and resell Canadian. We set the ladder at entry and enforce it after.

What Each Channel Is For

What Each Channel Is For

Marketplace for discovery, retail for scale, direct for margin. Problems start when two channels chase the same customer at different prices. We map channel roles at the planning stage so your Amazon listing supports your retail account instead of undercutting it.

What Actually Takes Time

What Actually Takes Time

Licensing and artwork run in parallel, not in sequence. Brands consistently underestimate label revision cycles and overestimate regulatory review. We run both tracks simultaneously and file complete, which is where the time is actually recovered.

Glossary

The terms that come up in every Canadian market entry conversation, defined plainly.

NPN

(Natural Product Number)

The licence number Health Canada issues to a natural health product such as a vitamin, mineral, herbal, or probiotic. It must appear on the label, and without it the product cannot legally be sold in Canada.

DIN

(Drug Identification Number)

Assigned to drug products, including over the counter items like chemical sunscreens, antiperspirants, and anti dandruff shampoos. Importing them requires a Drug Establishment Licence rather than a site licence.

DIN-HM

(Homeopathic Medicine Number)

The licence number for homeopathic medicines. A separate stream from the NPN with its own evidence requirements, and a common point of confusion for brands whose products straddle the line.

CNF

(Cosmetic Notification Form)

Cosmetics receive no licence number, but must be notified to Health Canada within ten days of first sale in Canada. Ingredients are governed by the Cosmetic Ingredient Hotlist.

MDL and MDEL

(Medical Device Licences)

Class II to IV devices require a device licence, and importing or distributing any class requires a Medical Device Establishment Licence. Licensed devices are searchable in the public MDALL database.

Bilingual Packaging

English and French are both required for mandatory label information in Canada. Quebec applies further French language requirements on top of the federal baseline.

Importer of Record

The Canadian entity legally accountable for a product at the border and after it clears. A liability position rather than a shipping role, and the piece most foreign brands have no way to fill on their own.

Site Licence

The authorization a company must hold to import, package, label, or distribute natural health products in Canada. Museo holds one, which is what allows us to act as importer of record for our brands.

What does Museo Brands actually do?

We are the Canadian operating company behind your brand. That means importer of record, licence holder, and day to day operator. We file the regulatory application, design and produce bilingual packaging, arrange pickup from your manufacturer, clear customs, warehouse the inventory, run Amazon.ca, and manage retail and wholesale distribution. You keep the brand and the equity. We run the market.

Do you handle Canadian regulatory compliance?

Yes. We do the filing. We identify which stream a product falls into, prepare and submit the application, build compliant bilingual artwork against the licence, and hold the site licence the import runs under. Where a product cannot be licensed here as currently formulated, we tell you before you commit inventory rather than after.

Why should we prioritise Canada?

Canada is a wealthy, English and French speaking market of roughly forty million people with high per capita spend on wellness and beauty, sitting next to your existing distribution. The reason it stays underserved is that it looks easy and is not. Different regulator, different label law, a separate Amazon marketplace, and a retail landscape concentrated in a handful of buying offices. The barrier that keeps brands out is the same barrier that protects the ones who get in properly.

Do you cover marketing and creative?

Yes. That includes Amazon advertising and content, retail trade collateral, packaging design, and the marketing materials brands usually have to source separately when entering a new market. Because we typically own the inventory, our incentive is sell through rather than billable hours.

How do we get started?

Send us your product list. We review it SKU by SKU, identify the regulatory stream and realistic timeline for each, flag anything that needs reformulation or relabelling, and model the landed cost. That review costs you nothing. If the numbers work, the entry plan follows from it.
